Barack To Run for President
The Reuters news agency (via yahoo) is reporting that today, Tuesday January 16, 2007, Barak Obama has filed papers to form a Presidential Exploratory Committee, the first step in making a bid for the 2008 presidency. On his website, Obama states
“I certainly didn’t expect to find myself in this position a year ago…I’ve been struck by how hungry we all are for a different kind of politics. So I’ve spent some time thinking about how I could best advance the cause of change and progress that we so desperately need.”
Barak would make the fifth Democrat to throw their hat into what promises to be quite the interesting election year. Barak, many think, is the first black to really have a viable shot at the White House; in the same boat is Hillary Clinton, though Clinton proves to conjure up as many sceptics as she does supporters. The other Democrats are, for the most part, your average White House bidders, only this time, they not only have to worry about themselves, they also have to worry about a silver-tounged Senator from New York and the young upstart who very well may turn this election completely on its ear.
This move by Obama is the second such move in his young career; the first was a trip to the early primary state of New Hampshire in December, a trip which brough a sold-out crowd and more than 150 reporters and news agencies. It doesn’t sound like much on the surface, but it’s quite alot considering his scant 2-year turn in the Senate. He first gained national prominence at the 2004 Demcoratic National Convention. Since then, he’s been adiment about not running in ’08; however, as of 2006, his statments shifted from flat-out ‘no’ to ‘well, it’s a distant possibility’.
Now, that possibility may be closer than he previously thought.
